What you ll need sheetrock or drywall is no different for tiling over than wood plaster cement or other wall materials.
Preparation for tiling onto plasterboard plasterboard should be dry securely fixed and rigid with no protruding fixings with the face to receive decorative finishes exposed.
It should be a minimum 12 5mm thick when fixed to timber framing or battening and fixed in accordance with the manufacturers recommendations.
If newly installed plasterboard you should be fine to tile directly onto it some people like to have it skimmed prior but i ve seen many trades tile directly onto the board.
Tiling onto plasterboard is fine if they are large size tiles you should use a cement based adhesive.
If you are tiling an area that is not in a bathroom tiles can be applied directly to the sheetrock simply and easily.
Tiling over plasterboard involves adhering tiles to a paper surface and although this will present little problem in dry areas if the wallboard is subjected to moisture it may deteriorate causing failure.
Afaik there s a weight limit for tiles directly onto plasterboard 32kg m2 i think which is better than skimmed plasterboard but imo if its anywhere near a wet zone you should use a more suitable cement board like hardibacker board.
I m also fairly sure that pva should go nowhere near tiled walls in wet areas.
Apply a thin layer of mastic or thin set mortar below the horizontal line using a grooved trowel.
